Bloodline

T he sound of an engine roared and sputtered as the grinding of tyres crushed firmly against the pebbled road. It was without doubt getting closer. The innocent noise had never felt so frightening. Even though they expected to meet someone, they now realised how naïve they were being. They were following scribbled notes stuffed in school bags; bits of paper slipped into library books. And then, like this was some shit episode of Scooby-Doo, they had gullibly followed the clues.

This wasn’t about huge Great Danes; buff blond guys with an aptitude for designing traps; hot redheads who got caught easily by monsters; hungry stoners munching on hot dogs; nor nerdy girls who lose their glasses but piece together the puzzle and solve mysteries. This was a potentially dangerous scenario. Nobody knew they were at the church, and who was to say this wasn’t the infamous Child Snatcher starting all over again? Three girls had already been victims. They could very well be the next.

Despite their position, the two youngsters felt exposed.

Becca was quick to make her feelings known. “I don’t like this,” she said, standing up and whisking them off to the staircase.

“Hurry! We need to go! They’ll be walking in through the main door any minute.”

Drew felt a tug of his arm as he noticed Becca pointing at the rug in front of the altar. It sat there so innocently but she seemed obsessed with it.

“Come here. Help me,” Becca demanded, pulling up a section of loose carpet at the altar’s centre.

“We don’t have time for this!” pleaded Drew in desperation as he watched Becca’s continuing struggle.

“Just shut your face and help me!”

Drew did as he was told. Striding over he knelt down beside Becca. Together, they rolled away the dusty carpet. Beneath lay a wooden hatch minus a handle, its hinges bolted into solid stone. Opening it was no easy task. Becca squirmed, digging her fingers around the edges. The wooden planks withered under her grip and splinters embedded deep beneath her fingernails. With one final strain, she pulled, letting out a desperate grunt, and the hatch began to give. As the gap widened, the hinges creaked and groaned. The opened cover revealed an indefinite tunnel of darkness. Drew gawped inside.

“Quick, get in!” Becca hastily instructed, still leveraging the door with her shoulder.

“What, in there?” Drew gawked.

“Did I pissin’ stutter?”

Drew took a second glance into the throat of the unknown. “You can’t even see the floor,” he fretted. “I could break my legs!”

“You won’t,” hissed Becca.

“How do you know?”

“You really want to talk about this now? Get in!”

“You get in!”

Both heads spun to the church’s outdoors as the sound of steps increased across the gravel.

“Fine!” snapped Becca, dangling one leg over the edge. “You really are such a pussy!” She lowered herself down, her body submerging into blackness as though she were being dipped into a pool of tar. Both hands hung on to the edge while her feet scraped wildly for an invisible wall below. She let go with a gasp of breath, waiting with uncertainty for the ground to break her fall.
